Each row in the schedule represents one monthly payment. The payment amount is fixed for the life of a standard fixed-rate loan. What changes is how that payment splits between principal and interest.
Principal is the portion that reduces your actual loan balance. In the early years, this is a small share of each payment. Interest is what you pay for borrowing the remaining balance. It's calculated fresh each month on whatever balance is left, so it starts high and steadily decreases as you pay the loan down.
The chart above shows this shift by year. Notice how interest (amber) dominates the early years and shrinks over time, while principal (blue) does the opposite. On a 30-year loan at 6.5%, you typically cross the point where principal exceeds interest around year 18 or 19.
Why does this matter? Any extra money you put toward principal in the early years eliminates a large future interest charge. The same $100 extra in year 1 saves more interest than $100 extra in year 25, because in year 1 that $100 would have accrued interest for decades.
